Paint 2022—Relationships and Limitations is an exploration by ten artists of the expressive language of colour, and of colour’s relational qualities.
Under the mentorship of Dr Maria Kunda, this is my first curatorial project. The show is being exhibited in Poimena Gallery in June/July22, and host a small symposium open to the public. In December 2022 it will be @ RANT art space in Devonport.
Artists
Cash Brown | Penny Burnett | Jane Giblin | Amber Koroluk-Stephenson | Michael Nay | Sue Nettlefold | Tania Price | Meg Walch | Alex Wanders | Julie Williams
The point of departure for the show will be ChromaCorona, a unique, bespoke, colour-chart book which I developed over 2020 in response to the first COVID-19 lockdown. Each artist (who I know personally from my undergrad or post-grad studies – ‘relationship’) has been asked to create a new work by selecting pigments from the pages of ChromaCorona. Therefore ‘limited’ to three colours, chosen from two consecutive pages of the book. Consequently, each exhibited work is comprised of only three pigments plus white. All other considerations were totally open to the artist in response to the premise of ‘relationships and limitations’. Unifying the whole show will be a page-specific connection with ChromaCorona.
Thankyou
I would like to say a HUGE thankyou to Paul Snell, Art Director of Poimena Galley for inviting me to curate his 2022 painting exhibition, trusting me with his gallery and reputation knowing I had not curated before was incredibly brave and supportive. All the staff at Poimena especially Louise Middleton who made the logistics and hang easy. To Dr Maria Kunda for walking with me through the process and allowing me to learn and lean on her experience and above all to the amazing artists whom I am proud to call my friends for committing to this unfunded project…. incredible generosity and faith - I am indebted, Pen x
